Tradition & Craftmanship
Östling & Brooks, Ltd. has been hand crafting fine jewelry since 1982. Initial design concepts are hand carved by Margaret Sutherland Östling. From the original master pattern the lost wax process is used to transform the design into metal. All castings are solid. All jewelry is hand finished inside and out.
We work in a variety of precious metals and fabrication techniques including: hand fabrication, wax modeling and lost wax casting, as well as a variety of setting styles such as bezel, prong and channel settings. We can assist you in a redesign of an existing piece and/or restoration of older pieces.
The technique that we use to craft our jewelry, has been in use for thousands of years. An original carving is made in hard wax. The carving is then encased in a plaster-like material called investment. The plaster casing is heated in a kiln over a long period of time at high temperatures (burn out) until the wax inside vaporizes. What is left is a hollow mold into which molten silver or gold is shot or pored using centrifugal or vacuum force. The mold is then quenched in water to release the metal piece. A new wax replica must be made for every piece. Every piece is carefully finished and hand polished. No plating or lacquer is used.
